What is the Purpose?
For one hour (plus) each week we will explore what it means to live our Christian life in the Spirit. We will discuss God’s transformative power to help us overcome the struggles we all face living in this world. We will explore God’s bigger purpose for our lives beyond our commute to work, endless flow of emails and long list of to-dos. We will delve into our spiritual identity found in Christ Jesus and five Spiritual tools that form the foundation of this identity. We will grow together in our understanding of the five Spiritual Skills we can use daily to allow God to mold us more and more into the image of Christ. Finally, we will explore how this new life in the spirit will not only transform our lives, but will transform our relationship with our Heavenly Father, our family, our friends, our neighbors, and our co-workers.
We are all walking out this Spiritual journey together, led by the teaching and example of Jesus Christ. We believe firmly in the transformative power of the word of God and prayer. One of our core Bible verses for this study –
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
Elements of our study are based on The Journeyman: Our Spiritual Journey to Experience God’s Love by Jim Sharp.
The Journeyman explores how Christians can live a more meaningful, abundant life by embracing the life God intended and purposed for us to live in the Spirit. The challenge for Christians in living life in the Spirit is to first understand we are spiritual beings made in the image of God. The Journeyman explores our spiritual identity and Christ’s transformative power to allow us to overcome anxiety, stress, fear, and other spiritual strongholds.
The book identifies and outlines five spiritual attributes or tools for embracing this new Spiritual life:
God's Unconditional Love
In a world of transactional love based on what will you do for me, it is hard for us to comprehend God’s unconditional love for us. There is nothing you can do to change God’s love for you. Nothing! Read 1 John 4:7-21
God's Amazing Grace
Grace is a free gift you cannot earn. His grace paints over the shame, overcomes the critics, and gives us the strength to walk through the pain of forgiving others and ourselves. Read Ephesians 1:7
Our Faith and Trust in God
There are no meaningful relationships in life void of trust. Our life’s journey here on earth is to learn to love God, which happens through our faith and trust in Him. Read Proverbs 3:5-6
Our Process of Dying to Self
The outward manifestation of this new life in Christ is to humble ourselves as servants. When we die to self, we see the world differently, cultivating an eternal lens to see the bigger purpose God intended for us from the beginning. Read Galatians 2:20
Meet Jan and Jim
Although we only lived a couple of miles from each other for years, it took God to orchestrate our meeting on an airplane flight to Dallas. That was no chance encounter, but God’s blessing.
Jan has a lifetime of experience leading her in her career as an organizational development coach and trainer. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Jan has grown up speaking in different venues since she entered her first poetry reading contest in elementary school. After graduating from the University of Alabama and developing her craft and expertise, Jan is now speaking and training on national platforms.
Jan’s passion for developing others stems from her zest for life and the relationships that play a pivotal role in her own development. She knows that “people need people” and her life is exemplary of this fact. Relationships drive cultures, which drive results, which is why her passion to engage people in everything they do from work, to home to community propels her focus to make the largest contribution she can for the time she is given.
Jim grew up in Florence, Alabama, and graduated from Birmingham Southern College. He will be the first to say he has lived a lot of life since and has a testimony he has shared with dozens of men and teenagers via Christian retreat weekends. During the week Jim works with employers across the United States to ensure their company retirement plans are operating in compliance and meet fiduciary standards required by law. He is the founding chairperson of Birmingham Vida Nueva, a Christian youth retreat ministry designed to mature teenagers in their faith. He is also the author of The Journeyman: Our Spiritual Journey to Experience God’s Love.
